The fact that the company I started is officially 10 years old, brings about many different emotions.

Attention Brow People! Katrina Parker, @katrinapmusic , is a wonderful client of ours at Damone Roberts Beverly Hills. I first met this wonderful artist years ago in Los Angeles at Ryan Black’s 88’s Cabaret show. She blew my mind. Not only did I become a huge fan but she inspired me to start singing as well. I got Katrina to come into our salon and have been painting her face and giving her those signature DAMONE brows. She was lovely enough to allow me to interview her:) PLEASE VOTE FOR HER THIS MONDAY! When did you start singing?
I’ve been singing since I could speak. I grew up surrounded by music. My mom would sing me to sleep and my dad would sing to me to wake me up (not always on key). It was only natural I would start singing myself.
Do you play any instruments?
I play piano. I also do a passable version of the “Sanford & Sons” theme on wood whistle.
When did you write your first song?
I wrote my first song when I was around 18 years old, it was a co-write with a lovely friend of mine Stacy Jagger. I was skittish about writing and she was determined to make it less scary for me. Working with her really opened me up to doing it myself.
Who and what inspires you?
As a vocalist, I’m inspired by classic, iconic singers like Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. As a songwriter, I’m inspired by indie pop in the vein of Feist and traditional country music AKA Hank Williams. I’m also very inspired by books and film, dreams, good long conversations and basically anything that moves me is fodder for my singing and songwriting.
When did you consciously decide to try out for the voice?
I had a friend offer to get me a scheduled time slot to audition and I laughed in his face! I had just started singing again after a 2 year break due to health issues and had no intention of being onstage so soon (much less on camera)…BUT he put a bug in my ear about it and I finally decided it was worth a shot. Two weeks after he brought it up, we scheduled the audition.
What have you learned so far?
I’ve learned that I’m capable of a lot more than I realized - both as a person and as a singer. Trying to do something as authentic, delicate and close to your heart as music in the midst of a reality show structure is HARD. It really tests your mettle - and I never thought I could handle something like this! Let alone adapt to it and even thrive at times, but I have. I’ve also discovered things I didn’t know about my voice until now. We’ve been asked to tackle so many different songs; it really stretches you musically.
What are some of your favorite moments so far?
There’s been so many! Seeing Betty White at the first live show, ha, I almost died on the spot. Being mentored by Alanis Morissette which made me kind of giddy! One of the most recent magic moments was the results show where I was saved from elimination by Adam. I mean, it was bittersweet fighting to stay on the show and at the same time seeing people I loved go home. That same night something really clicked for me, I finally felt comfortable on that stage (and I hope I continue to feel that way).
What is your next step after the show?
I perform again on The Voice this Monday, 4/23. I would very much like to stay on the show longer, but once my time here is done I plan to finish my independent CD and find a viable way to make a living making music.
And lastly tell me anything that you want people to know about you, anything at all.
I have been an underdog on this show from the beginning, but I think that is what The Voice is all about - defying expectations. I am not a sample size and don’t have a rock star persona! I am just a regular person MADLY IN LOVE with singing for an audience. I was born to do this and will continue doing it regardless of how far I go on this show.-Katrina Parker
