Sweet, Sweet Scrubbin’!

The trouble with buying items in bulk, is that sometimes you’re sick of whatever “it” is before you’re through. But thankfully that is not the case with sugar! Not only is sugar, pain and simple, useful [coffee, tea, cupcakes, cakes, etc.], but it makes one heck of a DIY body scrub base! Mix in a few other household items, and your skin is going to do nothing but glow!

Grab that browning banana, mush it up with 3 tablespoons of sugar, and a drop your favorite essential oil, or vanilla extract. Be careful not to over mash or it can get too thin. You want a chunkier consistency for this scrub. Once in the shower, rub it on, let it sit for a couple minutes, then rinse it right off with warm water. Delicious!

Mix 3 parts sugar, with one part olive oil, and many parts [20-25 drops] of your favorite essential oil. Stir that until it becomes an even paste and rub onto your skin preshower to get that “dry brush” effect. Once in, scrub some more, for another minute or so, and rinse off. So easy!

For a bright morning, reach for this scrub. 1/2 cup of sugar, mixed with 1/2 oil of choice [almond, coconut, jojoba, whichever!], and 1 teaspoon of fresh citrus zest. Mix well, scrub on, rinse off, and wake up!

Now you don’t have to worry about all that sugar going to waste; you have plenty of options now! Don’t forget, sugar can be used as a great lip scrub, too. Just equal parts sugar and the oil of your choice, then rub away!

Post Work Working It!

Not all of us have the luxury of dressing for work the way we would dress to meet up for dinner and drinks after… So what pieces should you have stashed away to make sure you can make a quick get away? Glamour gathered 5 easy items for you to have on hand, just in case…

1. A soft knit blazer that doesn’t wrinkle. Whether you’re wearing a dress, a skirt, or even trousers, a classic black blazer will keep you perfectly polished to head into an impromptu meeting, lunch, or even a presentation. This one is by Loft.

2. A rayon knit dress. Let’s face it, some days we don’t feel like dressing up, but when you have an unexpected meeting to attend, this wrinkle-free dress will be your best friend. Make sure it grazes right above your knees or at your knees. Also look for a dress that’s either sleeveless or cap-sleeved. Love this one byA.L.C.

3. Basic Pumps or d’Orsays. Now, a pump can take you from board meeting to date, this we know— but you don’t want to bury an expensive pair of pumps in your desk drawer for all eternity. Choose something chic and affordable, and trust me—you will have days where you’ll thank your lucky stars you bought them. These d’Orsays from Zara are calling my name!

4. An oversize clutch. There is nothing less date-y than showing up to meet a guy carrying a big work tote. It’s just schleppy, for lack of a better term. So look for an oversize clutch that fits your wallet and cell phone, and just pop your essentials in there and leave your tote at the office that night. This trick saves me all the time.

5. A statement cuff. If you’ve got to go from day to night, or just need to add a little pep to your look at the office, a statement cuff is an easy way to turn up the fashion quotient. This one from Topshop is a great option for the spring and summer months.

And there you have it! Are there any pieces that you stash and dash with?

Toasty Toppers!

Ok, ok, we all eat. And sometimes we eat healthy and well, and other times, we just grab whatever is in front of us a grub down [which is totally fine, in moderation!] But wouldn’t it be nice if you could whip up a tasty, healthy, beautifying snack? TBD does it again with their toast toppers—3 different options offering up health and beauty benefits! Read on to get your inner chef on!

Before we get into these gorgeous toppers, let’s have a chat about the wonder ingredient that is avocado. This beautiful fruit (yes, it’s a fruit) is super rich in dietary vitamins A an E and is most beneficial to the skin. With concentrated levels of vitamin A, its like a natural retinol alternative which increases cell turnover. Studies have shown that avocado consumption can increase the amount of soluble collagen in the skin which translates to better skin repair. A.k.a a dream in reducing sun damage, hyper pigmentation and scarring. Chowing on plenty of avos can also improve signs of a dry scalp and help hydrate skin in general from the inside out.

So, we have our avo-toast doing all kinds of wonders for our skin. Now, what else can we add?

1. RADISH + EDAMAME: This combo is not only delish, but comes complete with a few beauty benefits of their own. Radishes have a high water content and lots of vitamin C which is nourishing for the tissues helping to keep your body hydrated. Hydration = best beauty benefit in the book. Edamame contains isoflavones which many studies have shown aid in the prevention of collagen breakdown…another skin friendly food!

2. EGG + TOMATOES: Tip! Eating your eggs with the yolk in tact helps to preserve the nutrients as opposed to scrambling them where the high heat exposure lowers the benefits. Eggs are loaded with Omega 3 fatty acids which can be responsible for strong, healthy nails that won’t split every time you reach for your handbag. Tomatoes are packed with lycopene (what gives them their pigment) which is a powerful antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory that helps protect skin from environmental agents. That’s definitely a dynamic duo.

3. RED PEPPERS + OLIVES: Red peppers, like tomatoes also have lycopene (which we discussed and love) but they also have a unique ratio of vitamin A and C. This combo creates a huge antioxidant capacity which is very beneficial to your skin. Olives are rich in fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish, hydrate and protect the skin. Chief among those is vitamin E which has been shown to protect the skin from UV radiation. Basically a super tasty sunscreen!

Wipe Off, Wipe On!

Face it — some days skin care probably isn’t on the top of your to-do list.

And not that we need to sell you on how great it will be to be able to wipe your make up off, and then wipe your skincare on, HowStuffWorks captured the beauty of why we love skincare and cleansing wipes perfectly. Whether you’re super busy, under the weather or just don’t want to mess with multiple steps to clean your skin, you’re likely tempted to skip washing your face at least a few times a week. And if you’re away from home, your skin might suffer even more because it can be difficult to drag your normal battery of products along. That’s when face cleansing wipes can be a skin saver. Skin care specialists strongly advise washing your face daily, otherwise your skin can break out or become dull. But face cleansing wipes can make it a little more convenient to wipe your face clean before bed.

Face cleansing wipes also are easy to use because they come with a cleansing product already on them. Whether they are dry or pre-moistened, the wipes already contain the correct amount and type of ingredients needed for facial cleansing. Even people with acne-prone or sensitive skin have a wide selection of wipes to choose from.

Another major benefit of cleansing wipes is their all-in-one ingredients feature. Some of the products have cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing abilities, which allow people who normally don’t spend much time on skin care to at least get those basic tasks done. And for those who normally partake of a full skin care treatment but don’t have time on certain days, they can still get those three steps done by simply using one cleansing cloth.

Many people consider hygiene to be another benefit. Unlike with a pot of cream or foaming wash that requires the use of your fingers, cleansing wipes allow the user to clean his face without worry of contaminating a container with germs by repeatedly touching it.

With all the advantages and the wide range of types available, many people have turned to cleansing wipes to help them face the world with clean, beautiful skin.

Coming this spring, Damone Roberts will change your skin, and your life, forever with his AM/PM system.

What Will You Gain?

image

Have you been noticing all those beautiful, lush, full brows on the runways this Fashion season? Are you looking in the mirror right now, just a bit sad because yours just don’t seem to be able to live up to the hype? Fear no more! Damone Roberts Brow Gain is the product you’ve been waiting for. Jennifer Connolly better watch out after you apply this product nightly and give your hairs the nutrition and strength that they’ve been so desperately seeking, usually within 6-8 weeks. Don’t believe us? Read on to see what some of the top magazines and reviews are saying!

“Roberts most famous product promises to get your balding brows to grow hair”- New York Post

"Skimpy eyebrows   got you penciling in that arch every day?
Not to worry thick, lush brows can be yours, thanks to Damone Roberts Brow Gain” -Essence Magazine

"Damone Roberts Brow Gain creates healthy-looking, full brows by stimulating the surrounding hair follicle." - Juicy Magazine

"I love Brow Gain, it is a miracle worker.
My mom has always had eyebrows so thin and sparse that they were practically invisible, so she had been drawing them in since high school. I thought I would give Brow Gain a shot, so I bought it for her for Mother’s Day this past year. When I went home for the Fourth of July, I was amazed: her eyebrows were so much thicker and actually visible.
I decided that her next gift would be an eyebrow shaping with Damone.
Now a few months later, her brows still look thick and healthy even after not using the product since the end of the summer.
Thank you so much.” -E. Walks

"My friends tease me about my obsession with eyebrows but I feel they really frame your face and can make a huge difference in your appearance. Unfortunately I have always had fine hair so I spent a lot of time filling in my brows to make them look more dense. I even tried Rogaine which was smelly and messy but it didn’t help much. Last year I did a medical treatment which caused my eyebrows to thin even more and there were spots where you could hardly see any hair. I was pretty devastated to say the least. I tried Brow Gain and used it every night and very soon I could see little hairs growing back. I continued to use it and after about 6 weeks I had my eyebrows back - better than before! Some days I even go without the pencil! This product worked so great for me. I would definitely recommend it." - C. Cole

O.K I had my reservations at first. I did as instructed and waited the 4 to 6 weeks used it once a day and one day OMG it works!!!! I started to see little hairs where I had none from over tweezed brows of the 80’s. Damone’s “Brow Gain” works! It grew brows back where I had over tweezed for many many years. I had to call the salon and thank them personally for recommending this product on my first visit to Damone’s salon in Beverly Hills. The $35.00 is a bargain considering that I have spent allot more money for allot less product and no results. Finally, something that really works. I know I sound like and infomercial. I just wanted to share my happy, happy, joy, joy! I look younger with fuller brows and yes the 5 minute face lift as he claims is TRUE ladies once sculpted by the King I looked younger. Plus I felt younger and I could not stop smiling.” -Molina B.

Men Can Do It, Too!

Take care of their skin, that is! And according to Ask Men, it’s as easy as 5 simple steps, [although, we think that the last two are just extra bonus steps if you guys are willing to go that far!] But do remember, there are approximately 19,000 skin cells per square inch of the human body!

1- Cleanse

If you do nothing else, cleansing is the single most important thing you can do for your face. It should be the basis of your skin care regimen, but that doesn’t mean reaching for a simple bar of soap (which can overcompensate and leave your skin dryer than a desert). Men’s skin typically has large pores and very active sebaceous glands. While these glands are critical for keeping the skin naturally moist, they can often produce too much sebum, leaving your skin feeling greasier than an oil slick. Neglecting to wash away the excess oil and dirt can clog pores, which leaves the skin prone to breakouts. A basic gel works just fine, but not all facial cleansers are created equal. Look for one that is strong enough to cut through the grease and yet gentle and affordable enough to be used at least once a day.

2- Exfoliate

Sometimes cleaning the skin with a simple face wash just isn’t enough. A cleanser washes away oil and dirt on the surface, but what about all that nasty stuff deep down in your pores? Even religious use of a face wash will still leave the most men’s skin feeling like a bumpy mess. That’s where exfoliation should make an appearance in your skin routine (just two to three times a week). It helps dislodge debris that normal washing can’t touch. A good scrub should have granules to help smooth the skin and eliminate the dullness that results from normal pore clogging and dirt build-up. Exfoliation also softens hair follicles for a closer, less-irritating shave and allows the skin to better absorb moisturizers.

3- Moisturize

Skin care for most men starts and stops with a basic bar of soap or cleanser. But washing is the absolute least you can do to prevent your face from turning into a big blackhead. Even if you happen to live in a sauna, skin can get dry after showering and, over time, that godforsaken process known as aging makes it lose elasticity. Add all that to the horror of placing a sharp blade next to your face everyday to appease rigid HR standards for clean-cut wholesomeness, and you have a recipe for irritated skin that’s parched and taut. Showering and shaving open up pores and allow precious water to escape, but a light moisturizer can fix everything. It replenishes the skin’s moisture content and prevents razor burn. A moisturizer with SPF will also provide a critical shield against the sun. Harsh UVB rays cause the skin to burn, but it’s the UVA rays that lead to long-term damage like deep lines and skin cancer. A moisturizer with multispectrum defense takes care of it all.

4- Protect your eyes

There is one place on the face that men almost never touch: the eyes. But the skin around the eyes is the only area that actually deserves special attention, because men don’t age the same way that women do. Instead of a slow progression of fine lines and wrinkles, men’s aging occurs in quantum leaps, and one of the first visible signs of aging comes from the skin around the eyes. The soft, thin layer of skin that surrounds the eye is especially prone to developing creases and crinkles long before other parts of the body begin to show their age. All of this can be prevented with regular use of an eye cream. It smooths and protects the skin, but requires serious commitment and proper usage. Applying eye cream once in a blue moon does nothing, and against all common sense, it shouldn’t be put on the soft skin underneath the eye. Instead, eye cream needs to be dabbed gently on the edge of the bone around the eye to maximize effectiveness and prevent irritation. It will slowly absorb and spread to the fragile areas that need it most.

5- Protect your lips

A close second in fickleness to the skin around the eyes are the lips. The skin here is incredibly thin and prone to severe dryness, cracking, bleeding, and burning from exposure to the elements. That’s because the lips lack both oil glands to keep them naturally moist and melanin to provide protection against harmful UV rays. Regular application of lip balm with a hint of SPF once a day can help you avoid a life of being benched.

So get to it, men! You have no more excuses, it’s as simple as 3, maybe 5, steps to keep yourself looking younger and fresher—always a good thing.

Skin Dream Team

Just like our body, our skin needs to be fed properly to make sure it looks its best. But what exactly should we feed our skin to make sure it’s healthy and full of life? Below are three essential nutrients that you shouldn’t be living without!

Green Tea Extract- Green tea extract can actually decrease wrinkles and also makes you look younger. It is useful to incorporate green tea extract into your skin care product to possibly slow down skin aging.

Green tea extract is a good anti-inflammatory agent thereby reducing inflammation in the skin, and most importantly having an inhibitory action on collagenase (a collagen-reducing enzyme that breaks down collagen). Since green tea extract helps to inhibit collagenase, the topical use of green tea helps to promote the health and quantity of collagen, thereby maintaining a firm and elastic skin. In one clinical study is was shown that the skin had measurably more elastic tissue content after continuous application of a product containing green tea extract.

Green tea extract appears to exert a sun protective effect by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation. Therefore, it could apply a green tea formula under the sunscreen. It is best to combine green tea extract with zinc oxide-based sunscreens because zinc oxide is chemically inert and should not react with green tea extract.

Cucumber Extract- Cucumber extract has been used for many years to treat problem skin including acne and eczema. You can find cucumber extract in many natural skin care products that are specific for your face and body.

Cucumbers are rich in amino acids. They also contain vitamin A, C, E and K. Vitamin E is a vital ingredient as it helps repair your skin if you suffer from acne or any other sensitive skin issues. Cucumbers and cucumber extract also contain various minerals including magnesium, potassium and silica. Silica can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The cucumber’s nourishing, astringent and hydrating properties provide only positive skin and health promoting benefits to your body, which is something that is extremely important to you on a day to day basis.

Copper PCACopper PCA is another multi-tasking antioxidant.  Copper PCA is a component of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant naturally occurring in the body that declines with age.  Superoxide Dismutase helps protect cells from free radical toxicity.  SOD is one of the most effective anti-agers in the antioxidant class because of its ability to reduce free radical damage in the skin, therefore preventing wrinkles, fine lines and age spots, while offering protection from UV rays.  Superoxide Dismutase serves as an anti-inflammatory as well, and can also prevent precancerous cell changes.  Supplementing the skin with topically applied Copper PCA may help the skin more effectively utilize available Superoxide Dismutase.

Now what if you can apply these amazing skin savers with a swift wipe— no bottles of serums and supplements clogging your countertops? No bags of skincare having to travel with you, taking up precious space in your luggage? Debuting in Spring 2014, Damone Roberts AM/PM will make this dream a reality!

Trust us, you can’t wait for this life changer!

Because You Deserve It!

You make sure you’re taking the time to wash your face, use the right skin care, stay out of the sun [hopefully!], so what are you missing to make sure you’re putting your best face forward? Facials! Even with the best morning and night regimen, facials are still so vital to your skin’s health. Skin and Celeb fab, Renée Rouleau, got down to then nitty gritty with Refinery29, explaining why you, and your skin, deserve facials.

1. Expert Skin Analysis
Wherever you go to buy your skin care products — department stores, pharmacies, beauty boutiques — chances are, the consultant sees your face with makeup on. The benefit of getting your skin analyzed through professional facials is that the esthetician sees your skin without makeup. This allows the esthetician to cater to your skin’s unique needs — whether you struggle with enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, or dehydration — through advanced treatments and suggest the best products for your home care routine. In addition to his or her ability to identify and treat skin, your esthetician works with your skin for an hour so they can achieve a real understanding of your true skin type. This is something that a consultant or department store salesperson is usually not trained for.

2. Professional Advice
An hour of one-on-one time creates an opportunity for the esthetician to provide professional advice, skin tips and tricks. And, during the consultation, you have a chance to ask questions you may have. Part of getting a facial is learning how to care for your skin properly. Most importantly, this “lesson” will include which products or ingredients work best for your skin type and how to care for your skin at home so you can maintain the results of your facial.

3. Professional Strength Exfoliation
Most facials include a professional form of exfoliation using ultrasound, microdermabrasion crystals, enzymes or acids. Some of the exfoliating ingredients mentioned can be spotted in ordinary skin care products but during a facial you will experience the treatment at a professional strength. The exfoliation is specifically catered toward your skin type so that it will smooth the skin, increase cellular turnover, soften lines, and break up skin discoloration to promote more even-toned skin.

4.Clean Out Blackheads And Clogged Pores
With proper preparation and skin softening techniques, your esthetician will use a skilled method to gently extract clogged pores, blackheads, and impurities without causing harm to your skin. People usually have a difficult time eliminating blackheads at home because home care products can only help to reduce the surface oil in clogged pores. It takes a professional esthetician to properly prepare and soften the skin before manual extractions can take place in a safe and effective way. Though you may experience some redness after a professional extraction, this should not leave any marks on the skin.

5. A Scope For Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is on the rise, so it’s increasingly important to regularly check your skin for changes to moles and to look out for abnormal skin growths. Usually, these changes are so subtle and develop at a slow pace so over time you may not notice them. A benefit of having a professional esthetician work with your skin is that he or she will analyze your skin and bring to your attention any potential abnormalities that they feel you should check out with a medical doctor. An esthetician is also a new set of eyes that may notice skin imperfections that you have been blinded to over time.

6. Problem Solve
Whether it’s dry skin, brown spots, redness, irritation, or inflamed acne, a good facial is always customized to focus on what your skin needs to help solve your skin problems. If your skin is prone to brown spots and discoloration, your esthetician will use skin brightening or lightening treatments. If your skin is dry, then they’ll use lipid-increasing ingredients to repair your skin’s protective barrier to reduce dryness. Facials are always geared to problem solve, and the level of your facial’s intensity is contingent on the severity of your skin’s problem. By using the right combination of ingredients and high-tech tools, an esthetician can really create change in the skin over time to improve its appearance to achieve your greatest complexion.

7. Intensive Hydration
Every skin type needs hydration. It doesn’t matter if you have oily, acne-prone skin, or dry, flakey skin. Your skin cells are like fish and need water to survive. In order to maintain healthy skin, it is imperative to keep it hydrated. With oilier skin types, the face tends to produce more oil when moisture is lacking — the opposite of what you’d guess. Oily skin needs moisture, but keep in mind that the moisture it’s seeking is water, not oil. Hydrated skin is healthy skin and a facial will help regulate the proper moisture level your skin requires.

8. Increase Circulation To Encourage A Glow
There is no doubt that when blood circulation slows, the skin’s health is impaired. Aging leads to slowed circulation, which inevitably results in dull, tired looking skin. Facial massages and steam help to increase blood flow and circulation to bring new nutrients to the skin. This will encourage a youthful radiance.

9. Stress Release
Aside from the various skin benefits facials can offer, they are extremely relaxing and immediately de-stress you physically and psychologically. Studies show that stress can lead to unhealthy skin, so what’s a better way to eliminate stress and promote healthy skin than a face, neck, and back massage complete with dim lighting? And, if you think the $100+ price tag of a luxury facial will just stress you out even more, consider seeing a student at your local esthetics school. Basic facials start usually at $20. Teachers with years of experience supervise the student estheticians, so this can be a great option.

10. Because You Deserve It!
Women tend to spend an exceptional amount of time caring for the people in their lives. Caring for the people you love is rewarding, but, at times, it can be mentally exhausting. Take just a couple of hours to yourself to do something that you won’t be required to share with anyone else. A facial is just for you and will give you time to re-energize and clear your mind. Nourish your soul and pamper your skin in just a few blissful hours at the spa.

So what are you waiting for? Why haven’t you booked your Pumpkin Enzyme peel yet at DRBH?

XO!
