What drew you to becoming a beauty artist? Was this something you aspired to be growing up?
I’ve always been inspired by beautiful things. I have a memory as a child literally stopping. In front of the TV and staring at this women with a gorgeous face, beautiful makeup, wild flowing hair, sequins & furs. I was 5 & that woman was Diana Ross. I didn’t aspire to this field, yet was constantly drawn to it.
How and when did you get started in the field?
I studied visual arts & actually got a scholarship to study with the best art teachers in the world at Rutgers University based on a sketch I drew of…Diana Ross. I soon noticed that painting a canvas & a face were not too far from one another.
Where does your talent for painting faces and sculpting the perfect arch originate from?
Before painting anyone’s face, I always shaped the brows. My clients would call me after to say it was the first time they washed their faces after they finished the shoot/event wearing their makeup, and the brows were actually still perfect.
What are your top 5 makeup products that you can’t leave home without?
Damone Roberts Brow Shadows/Pencils
MAKE UP FOREVER Aqua Brow
Damone Roberts Brow Gels Tinted/Clear
MAKE UP FOREVER Smoky Lash Mascara
MAKE UP FOREVER Velvet Finish Compact Powder
What do you think sets you apart from other makeup artists?
I was fortunate enough to find my own niche in a market that harbors much talent. I have a work ethic beyond compare, and I don’t put my name on it, whether it’s my actual work, or a product, until it gets as close to perfection as humanly possible.
Why was it necessary to create your own flagship salon?
I realized that plenty of us as Artist give so much of what we make to others, when at times it is actually us who are doing most of the work. I was tired of working my fingers to the bone & then handing over a big percentage to others who I felt didn’t deserve what they we’re taking from me. Little did I know I actually had no idea the actual hard work that was involved in running your own business. By far the hardest thing I’ve EVER encountered.
What do you think sets you apart from other makeup artists? With so many beauty brands on the market, what sets Damone Roberts beauty products apart from the field?
I’ve been doing this a long time, and have been blessed to not only touch the faces of celebrities like Beyonce, Madonna, & Gwyneth Paltrow, but also have the luxury that some of my clients are not only extremely wealthy on the Forbes top 10 list, but also the luxury that some of my clients are from the hood…literally. So imagine one space where these people are sitting next to one another all in the name of beauty. I’m blessed to hear what the needs are of EVERY type of woman, and not just one type. So when I go into the lab to create a product, I keep that in mind. I don’t know of anyone else that can say they have the same type of client base, let alone a Salon in Beverly Hills & New York that has the same thing.
Is there a particular work/experience that you are most proud of?
There are many professional experiences. Being a question on the game show “Jeopardy”, or a question in the board game “Trivial Pursuit”, being named the number one most. Important person that Hollywood can’t live without by “US Weekly, or having OPI name a nail polish after me are a few, but I love to see Women walk into our Salons feeling one way, & then leaving another. I’m proud that me & my team brighten Peoples lives.
What piece of advice would you pass on to those looking to break into the field?
Be patient. There is no shortcut to success! You also have to put in the work.
Why is it important to continue to educate and work with the next generation of artists?
It’s the circle of life. I wouldn’t be here without people inspiring me like Kevyn Aucoin, Fran Cooper, or Sam Fine. You can’t be afraid to share your knowledge. What’s for you is for you… Period.
Why do you think it is important to have a Pro-only event like The Makeup Show?
It’s great for us to see one another, to meet one another & to support one another. I recently heard a quote on Oprah’s network that was so profound to me that I had to write it down. ” The making of ART is no different than prayer”. We create ART. It’s good for us to get in one space & celebrate one another.
What is the on the horizon for Damon Roberts in 2014?
I’m more excited about 2014 than I’ve ever been for Damone Roberts. I’ve been in the lab for the past 3 years working on a innovative Skincare line “AM/PM (patent pending) that is finally going to debut this year. It’s literally going to change the industry. Nothing like it has ever been done before. I’ve also just signed off on some new 48 hour lip stains that are moisturizing, and 48 brow stains. There is talk of bringing back OPI’s “Damone Roberts 1968″ Nail Polish one more time, since it sold out so quickly worldwide. Lastly it’s time to get back on TV again. I miss doing a regular series since TLC’s “10 years younger”, so I’m taking meetings.
